MOAD Secretary Observed HVAP and DADO’s Project Interventions in Surkhet

12 July 2015 | The Honourable Secretary Mr. Uttam Kumar Bhattar from Ministry of Agricultural Development (MOAD) were in surkhet for the monitoring purpose of High Value Agriculture Project (HVAP) and District Agriculture Development Office (DADO) activities in Surkhet.  The two days field visit from 10 to 11 July 2015 was organized by HVAP with the close cooperation of DADO, Surkhet inviting all the regional directors and other representatives. The Honorable Secretary and the team visited various project areas such as Bulbule Market Center, Birendranagar, Hariyo Hira Agriculture and Herbal Promotion Cooperative, Uttarganga, Surkhet, Bhairam Community Forest User Group, Bhairamsthan, Surkhet,  Bhattarai Spice Production and Processing Enterprise,Jarbuta, Surkhet and Organic Mountain Flavour, Kalidamar, Chinchu, Surkhet.



Market Development Center plays a vital role to promote agribusiness and economic empowerment of smallholder farmers as stated by the honourable secretary during his first days visit in Bulbule market center at Birendranagar. Mr. Bhattarai provided positive remarks to the manager of Bulbule Market Center giving utmost priority on the need and necessity for infrastructure management, system development for market management, space arrangement for other wholesalers and maintaining hygiene and waste management within market center.  Hence, the Honorable Secretary urges to HVAP Project Manager, Mr. Rajendra Prasad Bhari, for additional support to complete building at Bulbule Market Center.



Similarly, Mr. Bhattarai, has positively appreciated to the Improved Timur Nurery at Bhairamsthan,Surkhet while visiting the timur nursery.  HVAP along with DABUR Nepal supported the community to establish the nursery. He suggested the chairman of Bhairam CFUGs in regard of promotion of Timur at the community forest and get maximum benefit out of the products.  Likewise, the Honourable Secretary visited Hariyo Hira Agriculture and Herbal Promotion Cooperative at Uttarganga, Surkhet where HVAP provided support for construction of market collection center, construction of irrigation facilities, and other agriculture inputs support.  During the discussion with the farmers, he highlighted further need of production of off season vegetables and establishes culture of collective marketing to improve economic status of the community.





On the same day, HVAP organized 11th Project Coordination Committee Meeting (PCCG) under the chairmanship of Mr. Achyut Prasad Dhakal, Regional Agriculture Director, Surkhet where the Honourable Secretary participated as a chief guest. On that meeting, majority of the project stakeholders were invited. In fact, the motive of organizing PCCG meeting is to share HVAP progress and to get feedbacks from the PCCG members and other stakeholders for effective implementation of rest of the project activities. The forum found busy discussing on various issues and agenda; however, the honourable secretary was particularly interested on cold storage at Surkhet even though it was already finalized agenda in HVAP. HVAP with the close cooperation of CCI, Surkhet is on the process of establishing cold storage at Surkhet  with the total budget of 30 million. The honourable secretary urges HVAP to increase support volume from 30 million to 50 million.





Furthermore, the honourable secretary and team visited Turmeric and Ginger Processing Center at Jarbuta, and Kalidamar Surkhet. HVAP has supported both entrepreneurs to establish processing center that has empowered ginger and turmeric producers’ further production of these products in Mid-West Nepal. Mr. Bhattarai, the honourable secretary gave some feedback to both entrepreneurs mainly on branding, marketing, and developing core areas for ginger and turmeric in mid west Nepal.



At the end, the Honourable Secretary provided feedback to the HVAP team to speed up the work and develop plan for exist strategy.
