IFAD Mission Team Visited HVAP Program Areas

Recently, a mission team of IFAD, Nepal accomplished field supervision and monitoring visit at the project areas of High Value Agriculture Project in Hill and Mountain Areas (HVAP). The team was comprised with Country Program Manager (CPM) for IFAD Nepal-Ms. Lakshmi Moola, Mr. Basu Aryal-Country Program Coordinator and Ms. Kukka Korhonen-Web and Knowledge Management of IFAD, Nepal. The purpose of the visit was to monitor IFAD supported program activities and facilitate team for smooth program implementation. HVAP is one of the renowned programs funded by IFAD.



The team has observed various activities at different areas of Surkhet district. The Organic Village (ToV) or The Organic Ginger Processing Factory at Kalidamar was one of the major interventions supported by HVAP through window 1 for private sector to develop culture of enterprise at the community level. Mr. Samir Newa, owner of the enterprise/ToV shared his challenges, lesson learned, future plan and achievements that he made in regard of empowering communities to produce organic ginger and his plan to connect those product in international market, mainly in Europe.



Similarly, the team has visited Lekhfarsa-one of the hotspot for ginger production where HVAP providing technical to financial support for the farmers. The project has channelized support through the cooperative. More than 80 households of Jagriti Agriculture Cooperative of this VDC are engaging to produce organic ginger where Mr. Samir Newa has assured the producers to buy their product with fair price. Mr. Rajendra Prasad Bhari, Program Manager, HVAP and Mr. Basu Aryal, CPC, and Ms. Kukka from IFAD, Nepal highly interacted with the cooperative members about how they are doing and operating business. The team has also taken CPM for ginger farm visit at the nearby areas of Lekhfarsa.



At the second day, the team has spent their whole day interacting with HVAP staff met with HVAP program manager, from government of Nepal/Ministry of Agriculture and Development and Sector Leader from SNV. Mr. Rajendra P. Bhari, PM of HVAP shared about program achievements, lesson learned and future plan.



Third day was scheduled for field visit at the nearby areas of Surkhet district. IFAD mission support team along with CPM were taken to visit Bulbule vegetable collection and trade center where HVAP supported for market collection center. CPM and team has observed the ongoing collection center, met with various stakeholders who are providing support to the vegetable collection and trade center.



Likewise, the mission team observed vegetable farm at Latikoili, Surkhet. In Sano Surkhet Cooperative and Milan Chowk Vegetable Producer Groups are the potential spots where HVAP provided support for off season vegetable production and capacity building through business literacy class mainly for women groups. These cooperative and groups shared their learning and achievements with the mission team.



After the field observation, the mission team has shared their impression about the field achievements which was satisfactory. CPM and CPC provided strategic feedback to the HVAP team for future success and Miss Kukka provided feedback and inputs on knowledge management and communication for the project success. The field visit was started from 30. July. 2014 to 01. Aug. 2014.
